What Is Science Olympiad?
The Westfield High School Science Olympiad team competes at various Science Olympiad competitions throughout the year. Science Olympiad competitions consist of small groups working on challenges in different areas of science and engineering, which contribute to the ranking of the team. We meet on Tuesdays from 3-4 PM in room 188 to work on our events.

text_fields linkHow Do I Get To Be A Teammate For An Event?
At the beginning of the year, you will be asked which events you are interested in, and you will signed up for several of those events as a teammate. Each event has a maximum group size, we stride to balance the groups with both experienced upperclassmen and eager to learn underclassmen. As a result, the best way to be qualified for an event is to either demonstrate a proficiency in the topic and/or demonstrate an interest to learn about the topic.

text_fields linkHow Do I Get To Be A Competitor For An Event?
Whether you compete is decided by two factors. First we look at how hard you’ve worked in that specific event, then we look at how hard you’ve worked on your other events. The first factor is obvious, but the second factor is because Science Olympiad limits us to a very limited amount of people (18) who can actually participate. As a result, participate in all of your events to the best of your ability to increase your chances of being chosen to compete.

text_fields linkHow Do I Get Out Of An Event?
First, ask your division head. They can usually fix the problem. However, if we don’t have enough people for an event, we might just need you to compete in it. There is a maximum roster of 18 people per team, so we need people to compete in multiple events.

Events are split into three divisions to make everyone’s life easier: Building, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. If an event involves building something, it is in the building division (except for protein Modelling, which is life sciences). Biology, ecology, and any event related to living things is in the life science division. Everything else is in the physical sciences division.

At the end of each year, the team (not including graduating seniors) elects people to the different leadership positions. In order you run, you must be nominated by one person and have another person second that nomination. You can ask to be nominated.

The Science Olympiad website has a form for reporting issues with leaders. This is recieved and reviewed by the I.T. They anonymously inform the leader of the issue and give them a strike. If three different individuals file a complaint and then file another complaint 3 weeks later saying the problem hasn't gone away, the president is required to hold a re-election for that position.

text_fields linkHow Do I Make Annotated Rules?
Well, Science Olympiad doesn't require you to strictly annotate your rules in a single manner. Popular apps/websites are OneNote [On litterally everything; Free], Notability [iOS/Mac Only; $8/$6] and Kami [Webiste, Free(ish)]. Here is what matters: Demonstate a clear, detailed understanding of the rules. Cricially review the rules and determine what the team for your event has to get done by the competition and add it to the To-Do list on the Google Drive.

text_fields linkWhat is a G.R.A.A.A.A.A.C.E?
Sometimes, events start to fall behind. So we hold longer term, longer period meetings that are more fouced and provide the support that event needs. This is called a G.R.A.A.A.A.A.C.E. or "Graaaace's Resource [of] Academic Achievement And Advancement Accelerator [of] Certifiable Excellence" since a member named Grace came up with this idea...If you see an event that could use some extra help, you can request one by going to graaaaace.weebly.com or by asking your division advisor.
